Simple Effective Wall

Recently moved into a lovely Victorian Rented property. Stunning house though the loft conversion has a stair case as pictured below.

I had bought and attached the Bannister onto the wall prior to me taking the picture to make safer for even myself going up there but I have two small children and the open staircase scared the death out of me with regards to them.

Had never faced a task like this so after a little measuring and imagination I worked out how I was going to solve this.

Back to B&Q which was becoming my favourite place, Came home with two 18mm thick Boards of MDF and a couple of long lengths of chunky pine.
I wanted to make sure that the boards were sturdy enough to resist anything bashing them, safety was paramount in my head. I measured the angles of my stair case and the distances between it to the ceiling at certain points.

I cut my MDF by hand after marking on my angles. Then holding them up to wall i was happy with my angles. I then took a long length of the purchased pine board and drew a line to mark half way all the way down, stuck that onto the top of the side of the stairs as shown below leaving half exposed at the top. Once complete i attached the MDF boards to the stairs and butted it up to the exposed pine and drilled though to secure it. I drilled though at the top then too so my Boards were fixed.
I Took my chunky pine piece and butted it at the end and having measured previously stuck it into a gap id purposely left so the whole piece would remain rigid.
The white that you're seeing is holes i filled.

I ran a Caulk Gun down the edges and then with some basic white matt paint made the wall presentable.

For those eagle eyes, I then added a piece of beading at the top in the above picture as it wasn't as tidy as it could have been but that sorted it nicely.

Now the kids are welcome to use the stairs under my supervision of course but i'm no longer paranoid about what could happen.

Cost of build £37

MDF boards x2  £25
Beading £2.50
Pine £8
Caulk £1.50
